reminds me of the spacier parts of MPP (maybe even C Hz) but obviously mad heavier w/ those bust ur shit open beats. music to become insane to.

first listen (obstained from all boots so pretty psyched!)

spoliers (obviously):

Mr Noah - love the manipulated dog sounds in the intro. beat is phat! classic panda vox with that decending 'eh-eh-eh-eh' thing. love it. really dig how kinda greasy and grotty the whole arrangement is(not the vox though). cute high pitched synth line is cute. great, infectious groove and unsurprisingly strong melody. rad.

Face in the Crowd - oh man, what a start! like some sort of 80s teen drama theme song that got violated by man in a trenchcoat and then thrown into a used record bin next to some cheesy 'hawaiian nights' compilation. Love how the melody contrasts with Mr Noah - this one long and winding, Mr Noah short and clear. Again, the kinda grotty feeling is awesome. The sounds feel like the floor of a mechanics workshop.

Untying the Knot - ha! wtf?! the east asian sounds were a total surprise! central beat is deep and primal. harps give a bit of an alice coltrane/free jazz feel. this is clearly the slow jam/trance out. layered vox are rad. this track feels a little spooky/ominous which is unusual (for panda) and totally welcome. has more space than the first two which adds to that feeling.

This Side of Paradise - back to the scraggy, molested sounds. wow, love the sudden shift. really dig how awkwardly the melody sits over the arrangement. it fits but feels oddly detached. like it is constantly trying to catch up to the beat. i dig cause it feels more challenging than some of the earlier stuff. like it'll need to grow and imbed itself. mmm, juicy panda outtro complete with drone and spacey vocal bits floating around. nice way to finish an otherwise unusual/unfamiliar track.

i will be listening to this about 173 times more.

The wait was definitely worth it! We have so much to enjoy now.

The production somehow reminds me of 90s, the general feeling too - back to the times when releases had this special value.

Smashing EP all around. My only grip has to do with how crowded (hur hur hur) "Faces In the Crowd" sounds, but I'm sure that I'll come to appreciate it.

And I really want to hear more East Asian influence in AC from now on.

Mr Noah might be my favorite song he's ever done. I've been waiting so long for the real thing and it doesn't disappoint at allll. Can't help but smile when the beat drops. Wow

Really enjoyed the sample leading into Untying The Knot. Would also like to see that direction explored

agree completely. If there was one thing I had to nitpick about AC of late it's that there hasn't been time between the set up and the punch line, if you know what I mean.

I have barely listened to the boots and so the original vs new vs official song titles have me confused BUT was "Faces In The Crowd" (as a title) originally attributed to a song that wasn't Ms Pacman?

Yes, that is correct. Faces in the Crowd was originally the title given to the song in the first half of this video. The second half is the song called "Jabberwocky," but we think that it was probably renamed too, because none of the tracks on the EP or album are called Jabberwocky

Or he just didn't include Jabberwocky on the album or EP....but that would make me sad

makes sense to me that Noah is holding a playstation/game controller in the album art: this music is really inspired by video games! each song really has it's own unique "level" like flavor, is constant and thumping, and creates for me this side scrolling type movement in my head. Also, I dunno for sure, but I feel like I hear a lot of video game samples, or at least videogame-inspired sounds i.e. the distorted lightning claps that show up in Mr. Noah and Untying The Knot. I have to hand it to Panda, he makes some tough ass music; this is really out there stuff that is deeeeep. Completely surprised by Robert Frost/Untying Knot, which I didn't love in the boots, and now just sounds so cavernous and psychedelic. I am also wishing Pacman/Faces had some quieter moments, but i guess it fits with the rest of the EP's production pretty well. This side of paradise I find to be weird, though very well executed. If these are the B-sides...holy fuck this album......

I have to go back and find this post on the PBvsGR to see what it actually said. I remember reading Noah explaining his reasoning changing the timing of the "drop" for the September tour version of ctys, but I can't remember if he definitely said where the "drop" will be on the studio version.

yeah i'm not 100% sure about the rest but i definitely remember sonic said 'you won't be disappointed' implying that it will have the slow build up to the drop

" the transition into the song takes up pretty much the whole first go through the sequence (of ctys)...sometimes if the track before has faded to the point where it feels natural ill start singing the ctys parts but it doesnt always work out...its also one of the most bare boned of the tracks live so im often anxious to move towards the next place...but i try and sit in there as long as i can.... "

This is exactly what I like about it. I feel like that disconnect between the music and the voice gives it a nice dreamy feel. It seems inspired by that last track on the pbvsgr mixtape, starting at 45:30, but Noah's is a little off-kilter. I find it pretty pleasant, actually.

He's at the height of his creativity. He's trying everything, and everything is working. Stoked for the full album.

Fret not, I have similar feelings. I do like This Side of Paradise, but it just doesn't quite stack up to the other 3 songs on the EP, which I'm completely in love with.

But, I'm hopeful that over time, I will get more into TSoP.

This Side of Paradise is probably my least favorite at the moment but just barely cause the outro is incredible. Those falsetto vocals are the exact kinda thing I was hoping he would include in the studio recordings.

The thing about Animal Collective and me that I cannot say about any other band, is that the things I initially dislike the most somehow end up being the things I love above all, so I only speak in the moment. There's also the contrast between Mr. Noah and Faces in the Crowd, which are accessible, heavy tracks offering instant gratification, and songs like This Side of Paradise and Untying the Knot which don't sound like they'll be on the radio any time soon. I'll try some patience with Paradise in the meantime.

On a different note, the lyrics on all these tracks are really good! Especially Faces

Just give it a little time you guys! I listened to boots of TSOP over and over while recording my cover of it. It gets better with each listen!
